Pumpkin’s Garden:  The East End Eco-Village Project located off FM 969

Pumpkin’s Garden Eco-Village Project is a focused planning, mapping, and neighborhood resiliency collaboration organizing the food system, resources, and people in the most immediate bioregion and area. This project will both promote interconnection among individual property owners, CSAs, and other entities in the area of town east of 183 and extending into Manor.

A vision of a Commerce and Community Center, which aims to be collectively owned and run that will market produce, prepared and baked goods, and products from cottage industries around the Decker Lake area, is attached to this community as well as being an intentional community bed and breakfast space.

Workdays for this community are on the 3rd weekend of the month.

Awesome Hollow located on 3.5 acres in Cedar Creek

Awesome Hollow, Home of Creation Flame Church, located in Cedar Creek, this sustainable community is a spiritual center that exists to heal the world through creative action. This project is focused on these areas of action: healing and holistic health, creative expression and the arts, and sustainable development with open source equipment. Website: www.creationflame.org.

Creation Flame has been in full swing with Thursday Night services as well as their Light Ignition Initiation Ceremony, which was a chance for people to officially join Creation Flame and take their personal and group activation to the next level.  They host a series of workshops with indigenous wisdom teachers as well as festivals such as FLOW STORM:  cross-pollinating the teachings of world renowned flow artists with the wisdom of ancient traditions such as martial arts, dance, and healing as well as world changing ideas such as Permaculture and Green Building.  Creation Flame is looking to build an enclosed temple space on their property, Awesome Hollow, that will provide sacred space for spiritual services, church events, and music and flow arts performances.  A healing hut will also be built.  This natural building made of compressed earth blocks will be the home of Creation Flame’s healing cottage industry, lead by certified massage therapist and co-founder Summer Hargrave.  In addition to offering massage, other alternative healing modalities such as reiki, acupuncture, and more will be provided by guest healers.  The Healing Hut will also contain a small gift shop for books and locally produced medicina.

Workdays for this community are on the 1st weekend of the month.

Quilombo Paixão located on 5 acres in Cedar Creek TX

Quilombo Paixão is a modern-day quilombo.  A small community of core/vested residents who practice manifesting abundance through application of the principles and ethics of permaculture, serving as an example to others, feeding themselves as much as possible, and trading/selling surplus/prepared goods for income.

On top of the regular residents, there will be room and camp space to let to people coming for multi-day events, short-term labor/study, or even eco-tourism. The house and patio are designed for entertaining groups of 100 people or more, so hosting things like PDCs, arts festivals, and even renting out to other communities for their functions, are all currently in the works for next year.  In addition, this community has a sound studio, the set-up in the works for a commercial kitchen, and they make and sell berimbau and other instruments.

Workdays for this community are the 2nd weekend of the month

The Community Interdependence Network

In August of 2011, Vajra Azaya met with the Austin Time Exchange, Love ATX, and Community Cultivators to plan a coordinating event aimed at bringing diverse organizations that serve to build community across Austin together to network. This event included mostly grass – roots community organizations that focus on reaching people to increase awareness and skills for ecological sustainable practices in food, housing, work, and play. Some of the organizations present at the event included: the SHIRE, Design-Build-Live, Vajra Azaya, Love Unity Foundation through their project – Love ATX, the Austin Time Exchange, Community Cultivators, Amala Foundation, Spunlight Hoops, Creation Flame – Church of Awesome, MedMob, BLEND Connection, Sunfarms Kitchen, Food is Free Project, New Earth Center, the Human Path School, Evolver Austin, Go Local Austin, Black Swan Yoga, and Breath-Eat-Dance-Evolve. The result of this gathering was the creation and growth of the Community Interdependence Network which is a network of organizations and individuals primarily located in East and South Austin area. The network is an informal collaboration between organizations and individuals who network between each other for shared resources to further their mission of increasing awareness and skills for ecological sustainable practices in all modes of living.

Our Vision

  • Natural Housing

    Housing

Natural building methods offer housing that is sustainable, cost efficient, and has a low carbon foot print.  Naturally constructed buildings use local, recycled, or on-site materials.  The construction of smaller living spaces keeps the cost down.  Vajra Azaya assists with materials and labor for naturally built structures.  These structures are made with straw bale, cob, earth bags, earth [...]

  • Wicking_bed_-_FOOD

    Food

To move towards self-sufficiency, it’s important that each community provide as much of their food needs as possible.  This can be done most efficiently using permaculture practices which provide a higher yield using less water and without using toxic chemicals for pest control or fertilizer.  Vajra Azaya assists with materials and labor for organic food production [...]

  • East Austin cookout fire

    Community

Each community affiliated with Vajra Azaya is encouraged to open to the public at least a few times per month.  Therefore, each community connected by Vajra Azaya hosts workshops, educational tours, gatherings, and/or recreational events.  The purpose of this is to create community while also showcasing sustainable living to the public who may not [...]

  • Cat Dancing Booth

    Economics

In order to succeed in being self-reliant, communities need to create a cooperative economic model for their residents.  The economic development model for Vajra Azaya is based on “Cottage Industry” delivered in a Kibbutz style.  Each community has at least some people working in “Cottage Industry Trade” that bring in revenue to the community, while [...]
